We’re Just Starting Our Journey with Mahjong

AWe’re just starting our journey with mahjong, and it’s been interesting seeing where it’s starting to show up.

It’s been appearing more around us lately—not in a big, planned way, just gradually, in conversations, in requests, and even locally here in southeast Missouri.

There’s actually a new spot opening nearby—The Perch Mahjong Lounge—a members-only mahjong lounge built around the game and the community around it.

How this started for us

Our first mahjong set didn’t come from a business plan.

It came from a simple request.

A friend back in Chicago asked if we could create a set for a charity auction. We said yes, worked through it, and built it out.

That was the starting point.

Nothing bigger than that—just a one-off project that turned into something worth continuing.

What we noticed

After that first set, we took a closer look at what was out there.

And it felt pretty clear:
most options fall into two extremes.

  • inexpensive sets that feel basic
  • higher-end sets that get expensive quickly

There isn’t always a simple, well-made option in the middle.

That’s where this started to make sense for us.

How we approached it

We didn’t try to overthink it.

We just focused on the basics:

  • clean, readable tiles
  • a consistent, solid feel
  • something that holds up with regular use

Nothing complicated. Just something that feels good to use.

A small advantage of how it’s made

Because this is 3D printed, there’s another layer that isn’t typical with most mahjong sets—pun intended.

We can change tile colors and make adjustments to the box, including adding a name, logo, or simple text on the lid.

That kind of customization isn’t typical at this price point and is usually reserved for much higher-end production.

Here, it can be done as part of the process without adding much complexity.

The result is a set that feels more personal than something mass-produced.

Where the set fits

This set came directly out of that process.

It sits in that middle range—simple, practical, and made to be used.

The focus stayed on:

  • clean, readable tiles
  • a solid, consistent feel
  • durability for regular use

It’s not built as a display piece or a high-end collector set. It’s meant to be straightforward and usable without having to think too hard about it.

And because it’s 3D printed, there’s room to adjust colors or add simple personalization to the box if someone wants that.

The bigger picture

It’s clear the game moves through different communities in its own way.

We’re just building things as they come up and seeing where it leads.

The short version

We’re just starting our journey with mahjong.

Our first set came from a simple request.

We kept going because it made sense to continue building something practical and straightforward in the middle of what’s already out there.

And we’re still just getting started.
